Case study – Project SLAM

Project SLAM

The SLAM Vision

The MoD places a high value on its servicemen and women and they have committed to providing them with better living accommodation.

SLAM is a tri-service project which aims to upgrade progressively the worst Single Living accommodation (SLA) to Grade 1 physical condition.  Most SLAM accommodation consists of single en-suite rooms and some multi-occupancy rooms and for many young recruits SLAM will be the first experience of living away from home.  SLAM achieves a balance between the privacy of the study bedroom and interaction with colleagues in the communal areas.

The SLAM Requirements

User Focus Groups provided feedback as to what is required.  Among the most important needs identified were, private en-suite facilities, adequate individual in room storage space, flexibility of room arrangement, and a more generous bed.  Communal areas, adequate drying and laundry facilities, and suitably equipped snack preparation areas were also requested. The current SLAM design Model Standard Solution addresses all these points.

Recycled or recyclable products are the preferred option and waste management processes are implemented across SLAM sites to ensure responsible disposal of waste and recycling wherever possible.

Public Sector at Comet

Public sector at Comet have worked with the MoD on project SLAM since April 2008.  Initially supplying 180 Microwaves to their Catterick Base, where microwaves had to be supplied to individual utility rooms, and installed. Since this first phase, the MoD invited Comet Business Services to expand their range to Refrigeration and Laundry products.  72 major domestic appliances were consequently delivered and installed in individual utility rooms.

Public sector at Comet believe in social responsibility therefore their everyday procedures include removal of old products along with recycling of all packaging. Public sector at Comet has been educating customers on their recycling capabilities and is proud to recycle over 400,000 products a year and is also responsible for recycling thousands of tonnes of cardboard and paper waste annually.

“Public sector at Comet has worked with Public Sector organisations for over 20 years and we understand that not only providing a product choice is important, but offering a first class service throughout the purchase and delivery is essential.  In accordance with Public Sector efficiency targets we provide a wide range of energy efficient appliances and remove any old appliances, taking them away for recycling. In addition, we also remove all bulky packaging at the time of delivery.  We have found this is key when making a bulk delivery because you have neither the time nor the capability to recycle all the cardboard packaging that comes with new appliances today.”

The Outcome

A user’s questionnaire is issued some 6 months after acceptance for occupation. To date there has been excellent feedback and there is anecdotal evidence of single service personnel in private lodgings requesting a return to base to take up SLAM accommodation.

Significantly over 37% of Junior Ranks and 23% of SNCOs and Junior Officers have confirmed that SLAM accommodation has increased their likelihood of remaining in Military Service.

“We’re really pleased that Public sector at Comet  has been selected as one of the partners on such a significant project.  It’s really important that we can make a difference to those contributing most to our country.”
